A phrase that has stuck with me for several years now is “If
you want to marry a King, you must first be a Queen”. I have recently found
that phase more and more relevant as I have seen an increase in the popularity
of articles on all the ways a girl deserves the perfect man and the perfect
marriage. Articles titled “Why you deserve someone who will give you the world
and nothing less”, “21 wedding photos that look like something out of a fairy
tale” and “Never Settle for Someone Who Wants You Over Someone Who Would Do
Anything To Keep You” speckle my Facebook news feed. These articles are often interesting, quick
little snippets of self-empowerment and how you deserve so much but with so little explanation of why . What kind of advice is telling someone they
“deserve the world” without encouraging them to strive to be the kind of person
worthy of it? I think it is important for each person to feel valuable but
unrealistic expectations are unfair. They are unfair to you and unfair to
all the men out there. It is easy to
blame Barbie, Disney or any sort of product for encouraging unrealistic
expectations but when it comes to the types of things that my friends and I
read, it is hard to take accept the blame. It’s time to encourage realistic
expectations. No man is perfect, no relationship is perfect, but if a woman
wants to expect the best for herself, she must begin to strive to be the best
kind of woman that she can be.
Philippians 1:9-11
And it
is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all
discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and
blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that
comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.
